4KitchenAid KSC6222SS 6 Qt. Slow Cooker with Flip Lid
By ColoradoLee
I would love to be able to give 5 stars to the KitchenAid KSC6222SS 6 Qt. Slow Cooker with Flip Lid, but I am afraid it will ultimately deserve three stars. Until I have had a chance to thoroughly test it out, I will compromise and give it 4 stars.

I purchased this slow cooker as a replacement for my 15 year-old 3 Qt. CrockPot, which had performed admirably, but was too small for many dishes. Also, I had some concern about the health safety of its plastic lid. The KitchenAid's 6 Qt. size, glass lid, ceramic insert, and attractive stainless steel finish were all positives for me.

After trying out my first dish -- cheeseburger soup with diced potatoes and carrots -- here are my observations about the Kitchenaid Slow Cooker:

-- The controls are easy to figure out
-- The ceramic pot tended to wiggle in the metal base
-- The lid has a rubber (or plastic?) strip that seems to keep steam from escaping when cooking; however, this stri p came off while I was washing the lid and required a little bit of effort to thread it back on.
-- The unit gave off a "new Slow Cooker smell" during its first use. Hopefully, this will go away after multiple uses.
-- The hinged lids have springs, so their natural unlocked state is up. If the purpose is to keep heat from escaping, and one wishes to leave utensils in the pot when serving, a lid which stays down would seem to make more sense.
-- The slow cooker tended to cook my potatoes and carrots unevenly. In the case of my dish, the recipe called for a cook time of 3-4 hours on low with no stirring. Although my soup's total cooking time was 3 1/2 hours, I'd say roughly half of my half-inch diced potatoes still had a fair amount of crunch to them, while the other half were pretty close to cooked. I don't mind increasing the total cooking time for my recipes, but uneven cooking is a concern. Since one of the rules of slow cooker cooking is to avoid lift ing the lid whenever possible, I'm hoping I won't have to start stirring the ingredients in the middle of cooking.

UPDATE: April, 2013 -- Sticking by my original 4-star rating:

-- If I had it to do all over again, I would have saved myself some money and would have purchased the slow cooker with the standard, 1 piece lid instead of the hinged (flip) lid. Steam and heat has a tendency to escape from my hinged lid, since the fit of the lids is not perfect. I am planning on purchasing a replacement standard lid from KitchenAid.
-- I usually have to increase my total cooking time by 1 hour over the recipe's recommended maximum time. For example, if the recipe calls for 8-9 hours on low, I end up cooking the dish for 10 hours. Possibly, this is caused by the ill-fitting hinged lids which allow heat to escape.
-- Although dishes with meat, beans, and soft vegetables come out perfectly, root vegetab les such as carrots and potatoes tend to be undercooked, even with the additional cooking time. Again, this may be related to the issue with the hinged lid.
-- I'm happy to report the "new Slow Cooker smell" went away after about 1/2 a dozen uses. One expects brand new cars to have a "new car" smell, but that kind of odor in kitchen appliances just doesn't make food very appetizing.

5Excellent Slow Cooker
By Mrs. H
Used this to cook a batch of pulled pork for a gathering at my home. It was great to have the flip top lid to keep the food covered, warm and yet allow for serving. The oval shape wasn't taking up a lot of room on the serving table. I like the continuous keep warm feature after the food finishes cooking. Stainless Steel is a great look. Overall, I'd buy again.

5The ideal crock pot
By Kathleen D. Ballantine
This is the one to buy. It did a superlative job of keeping our Oscar Night soup warm. I look forward to putting it to a greater test!
